Blessed Jutta of Thuringia
Today we celebrate the feast day of Bl. Jutta of Thuringia. When Bl. Jutta was young she lived a life with luxury and power, however, when she died she had died as a simple servant of the poor.
Bl. Jutta lived a life that focused on virtue and piety these two things were important to both Bl. Jutta and her husband, both who were of noble rank. The two of them had arranged to make a pilgrimage together to all of the holy places in Jerusalem, however while they were making their way, her husband had died on the way. The newly widowed Bl. Jutta had to raise her children alone, after finishing to take care of her children, decided to change her life and live in a manner that she felt was utterly pleasing to God. Bl. Jutta disposed all of the costly things that she had this included; clothes, jewels, and furniture, and she decided to become a Secular Franciscan.
During this time of her life Bl. Jutta devoted herself to helping others: she cared for the sick, this included lepers; she tended the poor, whom she would visit in their hovels; she would help the crippled and the blind with whom she would share her home with. Bl. Jutta would see the face of God in every single one of the poor and she would always feel honored to help people who needed help.
During the year 1260, which was not too long before her death, Bl. Jutta had lived near the non-Christians in eastern Germany. While she was their she decided to build a small hermitage and she would pray unceasingly for their conversion.
Bl. Jutta's feast day is celebrated on June 25 and she is the patron saint of Prussia.
