Our Lady of Guadalupe
Today we celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
We will begin the blog by learning a bit about Juan Diego, who had the ability to witness Our Lady. Juan Diego was a 57-year-old who had lived in a village near Mexico City. We will begin this blog by remembering the events that occurred on the Saturday morning of December 9, 1531. During that morning, Juan Diego was on his way to a nearby barrio, so he could attend a special Mass that was in honor of Our Lady.
While Juan Diego was walking near a hill known as Tepeyac, he had heard miraculous and exquisite music. During that time a radiant cloud had appeared, and an Indian maiden dressed similar to an Aztec princess had appeared. The lady that appeared spoke to Juan Diego and decided to send him to the bishop of Mexico, who was named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was supposed to build a chapel where the lady had appeared.
However, the Bishop had decided to tell Juan Diego that he wanted the lady to send him a sign. During that same time, Juan Diego’s uncle had become severely ill. This made Juan Diego attempt to avoid the lady that he had met. However, no matter how hard Juan Diego tried to avoid the lady, the lady ended up finding Juan Diego. When the lady saw Juan Diego, she told him that his uncle would get better, and the lady had provided roses for Juan Diego to carry to the bishop in his tilma.
On December 12, Juan Diego had opened his tilma while he was in the bishop’s presence. When Juan Diego opened his tilma, the roses had fallen to the ground, and the bishop had sunk to his knees. On the tilma where the roses had been, appeared a beautiful image of Mary.
This feast day shows us how no matter how hard we may try to avoid Our Lady, She is always going to be with us. Our Lady loves us so much, so we must turn to Her in prayer and we must ask Her for guidance and protection from all harm.
