Blessed Raymond Lull
Today we remember the life of Bl. Raymond who devoted his life to promoting the missions and he died a missionary in North Africa.
Bl. Raymond was born during the year 1235 in Palma which was located on the island of Mallorca which is in the Mediterranean Sea. Bl. Raymond had earned a very high position in the king’s court there. One day Bl. Raymond had heard a very powerful sermon that inspired him to dedicate his entire life to working for the conversion of people who had lived in North Africa. Bl. Raymond was able to become a Secular Franciscan and he was able to found a college where missionaries were able to learn the Arabic they needed in order to be successful on their missions. Bl. Raymond eventually retired to solitude, he spent nine years as a hermit. During that time, Bl. Raymond had wrote on all branches of knowledge, and his work earned him the title “Enlightened Doctor.”
Bl. Raymond was able to make many trips throughout Europe to meet popes, kings, and princes in order to get approval in establishing special colleges which could help prepare future missionaries. Bl. Raymond was able to achieve his goal during the year 1311, when the Council of Vienne had ordered the creation of chairs in Hebrew, Arabic, and Chaldean at the many universities.
When Bl. Raymond was around 79 years old, Bl. Raymond went to North Africa during the year 1314 to be a missionary himself. However, while he was making his way, an angry crowd of people had thrown rocks and stones at him in the city of Bougie. Later on Genoese merchants decided to take him back to Mallorca, where he eventually died. Bl. Raymond was later beatified during the year 1514 and his feast day is celebrated on June 30.
