Saint Isidore the Farmer

Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Isidore the Farmer. St. Isidore was born in Madrid during the year 1070. When St. Isidore was extremely young age, St. Isidore was able to enter and work for the service of John de Vergas, who was a very wealthy landowner who was from Madrid, and St. Isidore worked very faithfully and hard on his estate which was located outside the city for the rest of his life.

St. Isidore married a young woman who had a very similar personality as he did, the women he married was a very simple and upright person just as he was. St. Maria de la Carbeza who was the women he married is also a saint. Together St. Isidore and St. Maria were able to have one son, however, he died as a child.

St. Isidore loved his faith a lot and he had a huge devotion to his faith. St. Isidore would wake up very early in the morning so that he could go to church. Also when it was the holidays, St. Isidore would spend his time visiting the different churches that were in Madrid and in surrounding areas.

St. Isidore had a beautiful gift, while he was working St. Isidore was able to talk to God, due to the fact that St. Isidore had this beautiful gift he would talk to God all day.

However, his deep and strong devotion, started to become a problem for some of his coworkers. A lot of his coworkers would complain that he would show up late due to the fact that he decided to attend church.

St. Isidore is especially known for his large and strong love for the poor, and there are many different stories and reports of St. Isidore being able to supply the poor miraculously with food. St. Isidore also concerned a lot for the animals and he would make sure that the animals received the proper treatment.

St. Isidore passed away on May 15, 1130. St. Isidore was later declared a saint during the year 1622, along with St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis Xavier, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Philip Neri. Together, this beautiful group of saints are known in Spain as “the five saints.”

St. Isidore is the patron saint of farmers and rural communities. St. Isidore is also the patron of Madrid, Spain, and of the United States National Rural Life Conference.
