St Albert Chmielowski
Today we celebrate the feast day of St Albert Chmielowski. St. Albert was born on August 20, 1854 in Igolomia which is located very close to Kraków. Growing up St. Albert was the eldest of four children in an extremely wealthy family, and he was christened Adam.
During the year 1864 the revolt against Czar Alexander III had occurred, during this time St. Albert had gotten wounds that forced the amputation of his left leg.
St. Albert was extremely talented and he had a very large talent for painting which led to him being able to study in Warsaw, Munich, and Paris. St. Albert eventually returned to Kraków and he was able to become a Secular Franciscan. During the year 1888, St. Albert was able to found the Brothers of the Third Order of Saint Francis, who were Servants to the Poor, and during this time he changed his name from Adam to Albert. The group that he had founded worked primarily with the homeless, they depended completely on alms while serving the needy regardless of age, religion, or politics. A community of Albertine sisters was established later as well.
St. Albert sadly passed away on December 25, 1916. St. John Paul II later beatified Albert during the year 1983, and he canonized him six years later. St. Albert’s liturgical feast is celebrated on June 17.
