St. Aldemar
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Aldemar an 11 century monk who lived in Italy, and was known for his ability to work miracles through his prayers and his wisdom.
When St. Aldemar was a young child he was sent to a monastery in Monte Cassino, Italy which was founded by St. Benedict of Nursia. After many years of studying he advanced in his studies rapidly and became known as “Aldemar the Wise.”
After St. Aldemar had become a monk, due to his learning ability and his wisdom a princess asked him to lead a new convent that she had founded. St. Aldemar accepted the role happily and through all the hard times he had encountered his prayers helped him get through all of them. St. Aldemar's prayers are said to have worked many miracles. During all his service it was clear that he was given the gift of working true miracles through his prayers and service to God. However, the many miracles he performed attracted large groups of people and a lot of attention which lead to him being called back to Monte Cassino, Italy.
A lot of anger and problems arose after his abbot called him back to Monte Cassino, the princess was very disappointed with this decision. Eventually St. Aldemar escaped to a different location and ended up living with three religious brothers in a different town. St. Aldemar spent some time with the brothers in the town of Boina, Italy. However one of the brothers disliked him and attempted to kill him.
The brother who tried to kill him tried to shoot him with a crossbow. However, he made a mistake when handling the weapon and injured himself. The brother who tried to kill him was severely injured due to the crossbow incident, and his injury would only get worse as the days went on. As soon as St. Aldemar prayed that the brother's injury would be cured, the brother's injury started to cure immediately. Instead of St. Aldemar acting out of revenge and anger, he simply forgave the brother and prayed he would get better.
After he spent the time with the three brothers, he decided to leave the house and ended up going to a different region of Italy where he built his own monastery. Over time St. Aldemar was able to create several houses and he directed all the communities.
St. Aldemar lived a life filled with joy and forgiveness towards others due to the fact that he lived a life filled with prayer and devotion to God. It is important that we act like St. Aldemar and we let Christ into our lives fully so that we may be guided by his love and treat everyone with kindness, respect, mercy and love. St. Aldemar died during the year 1080 and his feast day is celebrated on March 24th.
Prayer to St. Aldemar:
St. Aldemar intercede that we may be able to have the mercy and forgiveness we need to be able to treat others with more kindness and respect regardless of what they have done to us. Help us to find the courage and mercy we need to be able to pray for those who persecute us and put us down. St. Aldemar guide us on our journey to sainthood, help us to master all the virtues that we lack in our lives so that we may grow in a deeper devotion to Christ. St. Aldemar help us to humble ourselves so that we may realize our mistakes so that we do not judge others and we can be more forgiving so that we may allow others to encounter Christ through our actions and words.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord and Mary Our Mother in Heaven.
Amen
