St. Bede the Venerable
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Bede the Venerable. St. Bede was a very powerful and very impactful writer.
Ever since a young age, St. Bede was able to be taken care of by the abbot of the Monastery of St. Paul, Jarrow. St. Bede’s hard work and dedication during all of his studying and work is what helped him to be successful and is what truly produced a saint and an extraordinary scholar, one of the most impactful scholars of his time.
St. Bede was very smart, and he was well educated in all the sciences and many other things that were present in his times this included; natural philosophy, the philosophical principles of Aristotle, astronomy, arithmetic, the lives of the saints and the Holy Scripture.
St. Bede was ordained a deacon at the age of 19 and St. Bede was later ordained a priest at the age of 30. During his life, however especially during this time St. Bede was very busy and occupied with learning, writing, and teaching. Also he was writing his own books, he was able to compose 45 books on his own, these books included 30 commentaries on books of the Bible.
St. Bede’s book called Ecclesiastical History of the English People is regarded as of decisive importance in the art and science of writing history.
When St. Bede had passed away, a very unique era in history was coming to an end. This era had fulfilled its purpose because it prepared Western Christianity to assimilate the non-Roman barbarian North. St. Bede was able to recognize and see the opening to a new day in the life of the Church even before and while it was happening.
St. Bede was usually wanted by many kings and other notables because of his powerful writings, even Pope Sergius wanted to meet him. However, St. Bede was able to remain in his own monastery his entire life until his death.
St. Bede actually only left once, and that is because he decided to leave for a few months since it allowed him to teach in the school of the archbishop of York.
St. Bede died on May 25, 735 and he was praying his favorite prayer before he passed away: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As in the beginning, so now, and forever.”
St. Bede is the patron saint of scholars and his feast day is celebrated on May 25.
Prayer to St. Bede:
St. Bede intercede that we may be able to overcome every difficult obstacle we may encounter whether it may be personal, school or work related. St. Bede help us to gain the wisdom and patience we need to forgive everyone and help us to be a better example of our faith.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord and Mary Our Mother in Heaven
