St. Casilda of Toledo
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Casilda of Toledo. St. Casilda was born during the year 950 into a very high class Muslim family. St. Casilda’s father was a Muslim leader and the King of Toledo, Spain during that time. When St. Casilda was young, St. Casilda was a very devoted Muslim and she was very kind to all the Christian prisoners.
St. Casilda would help the imprisoned because she was hurt by the imprisonment and torture that many Christians endured due to their faith. St. Casilda would visit the Christians in the prison and she would smuggle them food under her clothing. It is believed that during one occasion, when St. Casilda was trying to smuggle food to the Christian prisoners, some guards asked her if she was hiding food under her clothes, when they checked all the bread she had, turned into a bunch of roses.
During the years St. Casilda lived a lot of political and religious conflict was occurring. However, St. Casilda decided to choose to live a life of kindness and respect towards everyone regardless of who they were.
When St. Casilda was young she became extremely ill, however she did not believe that any of the doctors had the power to cure her. Therefore, St. Casilda decided to go on a pilgrimage all the way to the shrine of San Vincenzo which was located in the northern region of Spain.
A lot of people who went to the shrine of San Vincenzo, were suffering from many different types of illnesses. St. Casilda went to the shrine because she wanted to visit the healing waters from the shrine. When St. Casilda decided to leave the shrine her illness was completely gone and she felt way better.
Due to the fact that St. Casilda experienced such a beautiful miracle, she converted and became a Christian. Once St. Casilda became a Christian she started to live a life of full solitude and penance and she did this far from the shrine. St. Casilda is said to have lived up to 100 years. St. Casilda passed away during the year 1050.
St. Casilda shows us the importance of taking care of everyone regardless of what other people may say about them. St. Casilda looked at every person knowing that they were a child of God and they deserved to be taken cared of and treated with love and by doing so St. Casilda preserved their human dignity. It is important act towards others like St. Casilda did and take care of every person because everyone is a child of God and we all have a human dignity that can never be taken away from us regardless of what we have done, it is our job as Christians to preserve everyone's human dignity and treat everyone with love. St. Casilda's feast day is celebrated on April 9.
St. Casilda prayer:
St. Casilda help us to be able to guide more people to Christ. Give us the strength and patience we need to serve those who have done wrong to us so that we may spread God’s love and mercy to everyone. St. Casilda help us to have the strength we need to be kind and respectful to everyone we meet so that we may be a better example of Christ to everyone. St. Casilda please help all of those who don’t know God to find out who he is so that they may be able to live a life close to him.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord and Mary Our Mother in Heaven
Amen
