St Cyril of Alexandria
Today we remember the life that was lived by St. Cyril. St. Cyril, during his life was actually recognized as a very talented and great teacher of the Church. St. Cyril had began his career when he had became an archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt. St. Cyril was able to close many churches that belonged to the Novatian heretics.
St. Cyril’s knowledge of theology and Church history is something that helped him greatly in his struggles against the heresy of Nestorius. It also helped him teach others that in Christ there was truly two persons, one human and one divine.
St. Cyril was able to be the pope’s representative at the Council of Ephesus that occurred during the year 431. At the council St. Cyril condemned Nestorianism and proclaimed that Mary was truly the “God-bearer” and the mother of the one Person who is truly God and truly human. St. Cyril was later caught in a confusing situation that followed, and St. Cyril was deposed and imprisoned for close to three months. After St. Cyril served his time he was welcomed back to Alexandria.
During this time St. Cyril had encountered many difficulties with some of his own allies, because he had gone too far, sacrificing not only language but also orthodoxy. Until his death, St. Cyril’s policy of moderation kept majority of his extreme partisans under extreme control. When St. Cyril was on his deathbed, despite pressure, he refused to condemn the teacher of Nestorius.
