St Fabian
Today we will remember the life that was lived by St. Fabian. During his life St. Fabian was a Roman layman who had visited from his farm one day as the clergy and the people were preparing to elect a new pope. Eusebius, who is a well known Church historian, stated that a dove flew in and settled on the head of Fabian. This sign united the votes of clergy and laity, and he was chosen unanimously.
St. Fabian was able to lead the Church for about 14 years and he had later died a martyr’s death during the persecution of Decius which occurred during the year 250 A.D. St. Cyprian had written that St. Fabian was an “incomparable” man whose glory during death had matched the holiness and purity of his life.
The stone that had been used to cover St. Fabian’s grave may still be seen. It is broken into four pieces, and it bears the Greek words, “Fabian, bishop, martyr.” St. Fabian shares the celebration of his feast day with St. Sebastian which is on January 20.
