St Gregory the Great
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Gregory the Great. St. Gregory was actually the prefect of Rome before he was thirty which is unbelievable. After he had spent close to five years in office he decided to resign and he founded not one but six monasteries on his Sicilian land. St. Gregory had later became a Benedictine monk.
St. Gregory was also able to get ordained and he became one of the pope’s seven deacons. St. Gregory had later became an abbot and he was later elected Pope by the clergy.
St. Gregory was very direct and firm, and due to this he was able to remove many unworthy priests, he would also care for the poor and vulnerable and he would take care of the persecuted Jews and the many people who were affected by the plague and famine. St. Gregory was truly amazing due to the amazing service that he had done for others.
St. Gregory is especially well known for his reformation of the clergy and for strengthening the respect for doctrine. St. Gregory also loved Gregorian chant.
St. Gregory had also lived and served during a difficult time in history due to the invading Lombards and the many difficulties that were occurring in the east. However, when Rome was under attack he took the issue into his hands and talked to the Lombard king and helped solve the issues.
St. Gregory was a very impactful writer and his book, Pastoral Care, focuses on the duties and the many responsibilities of bishops. His book was so impactful that it has been read for generations after it was written and it is still loved and read today. St. Gregory was able to dig deep into the Gospels and he truly wrote impactful homilies which impacted many people when they heard it and his homilies still brings many people to Christ because of how informative they are. St. Gregory is a very impactful writer, I recommend you check out his many books, I definitely put his writings at the same level as St. Augustine.
St. Gregory is the patron saint of England, epilepsy, musicians and teachers. St. Gregory’s feast day is celebrated on September 3.
