St. Hugh of Grenoble
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Hugh of Grenoble, who was a Benedictine bishop in Grenoble, France.
St. Hugh was born during the year 1053 in the Dauphine region in France. St. Hugh was a very wise and hardworking student which helped him to be a very successful person. St. Hugh later became one of the canons in a cathedral in Valance.
During the year 1080, when St. Hugh was at a synod ( an assembly of clergy) which was taking place in Avignon, St. Hugh was named the bishop of Grenoble, France.
St. Hugh served as a bishop in France for around 52 years and he had faced a lot of challenges ever since the day he began. During the time St. Hugh was bishop a lot of corruption was present within the church. For example during that time a lot of violations were occurring, a lot of religious indifference and ignorance was present as well. After the first two years St. Hugh thought he had enough of all the issues he encountered, so he tried to disappear to a monastery and he became a Benedictine. However this plan may have worked for year but the pope at the time who was St. Gregory Vll called him back after a year to continue his work of reform in Grenoble, France.
St. Hugh was very good in the role as a reformer because he had a strong devotion to God and to the church which helped him to get through every obstacle or problem he encountered during his work. St. Hugh was said to have a very strong personality which is seen through his perseverance which led him to being a successful reformer.
When conflicts would occur between the state and the Church, St. Hugh would always be a strong defender for the Church and he would speak with a lot of clarity and wisdom. St. Hugh was a man who was filled with a lot of courage due to his trust and faith in God. St. Hugh would always support the Papacy. St. Hugh was also a very persuasive and loving preacher and he was able to guide many people to God. Large crowds would attend the clergy’s that St. Hugh preached because St. Hugh gave a whole new outlook to their ministry and service to others. More people started to care for the poor, and the religious life was able to have a new start in his diocese due to St. Hugh's preaching.
St. Hugh gave the land to St. Bruno for La Grande Chartreuse abbey, and St. Hugh helped create the Carthusians. St. Hugh was able to give both his mother and his 100 year old father their last rites.
St. Hugh is considered to be a patron saint for every person who feel overwhelmed or worried by all of the problems that are occurring in the world. St. Hugh passed away during the year 1132, and he was canonized 2 years after his death. St. Hugh’s feast day is celebrated on April 1st.
