St Joan of the Cross
Today we will reflect on the life of St. Joan of the Cross.
St. Joan was born in Anjou, France, during the year 1666. Ever since a young age, she had spent much time working in the family business which was a small shop near a religious shrine. After St. Joan’s parents’ had died she was able to take over the shop. St. Joan was able to quickly become known for her greediness and she was known for the insensitivity that she had shown toward the beggars who had often went to her seeking help.
However, this greed that St. Joan had had ended after she was touched by the strange woman who she met. The strange woman had claimed that she was on intimate terms with the deity. St. Joan, who had always been very devout, even scrupulous, was able to become a new person. St. Joan had began caring for many needy children. Then the poor, the elderly, and the sick had came to her. Over some time, she was able to close the family business so she could devote herself fully to good works and penance.
Later on, St. Joan had went on to found what later came to be known as the Congregation of Saint Anne of Providence. It was then she took the religious name of St. Joan of the Cross. When St. Joan had died during the year 1736 she had founded 12 religious houses, hospices, and schools. St. John Paul II canonized her during the year 1982.
