St. John Jones and St. John Wall

Both of the friars were martyred in England during the 16th and 17th centuries because they had refused to deny their faith.

St. John Jones was Welsh. St. John Jones was ordained a diocesan priest and during his life he was twice imprisoned for administering the sacraments before leaving England during the year 1590. St. John Jones had decided to join the Franciscans when he was around the age of 60 and he had later returned to England for three years later while Queen Elizabeth I was at the height of her power. St. John Jones had ministered to many Catholics in the English countryside until he was later imprisoned during the year 1596. St. John Jones was later condemned to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. St. John Jones was executed on July 12, 1598.

St. John Wall was actually born in England, however he received his education at the English College of Douai, Belgium. St. John Wall was ordained in Rome during the year 1648, he had entered the Franciscans in Douai a few years later. During the year 1656 he had returned to work secretly in England.

During the year 1678, Titus Oates had worked many English people into a very large frenzy over an alleged papal plot to murder the king and restore Catholicism in that country. Due to the allegations and frenzy that had occurred, during that year many Catholics were legally excluded from Parliament, a law which was not repealed until the year 1829. St. John Wall was later arrested and he was imprisoned during the year 1678, and he was executed the following year.

St. John Jones and St. John Wall were both canonized during the year 1970.
