St. Joseph Cafasso
Today we remember the life of St. Joseph Cafasso. St. Joseph was born during on January 15, 1811. Ever since he was a young man, St. Joseph loved to visit and attend Mass and he was well known due to his humility and fervor in prayer. After St. Joseph had been ordained, he was assigned to a very nice seminary in Turin. While, St. Joseph was there he was able to work against the spirit of Jansenism which was a excessive preoccupation with sin and damnation. St. Joseph was able to use the works of St. Francis de Sales and St. Alphonsus Liguori to moderate the rigorism popular at the seminary.
St. Joseph had also recommended membership in the Secular Franciscan Order to many different priests. St. Joseph spent a lot of his time urging a deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and he would encourage daily Communion. In addition to all of the teaching duties he had, St. Joseph was still an excellent preacher, confessor, and he was a great retreat master. St. Joseph was also highly recognized for his work with many condemned prisoners, and he would help many of them die at peace with God.
St. Joseph urged one of his former pupils who was actually Saint John Bosco to establish the Salesians congregation so that he could work with a lot of the youth of Turin.
St. Joseph Cafasso passed away during the year 1860, and he was canonized during the year 1947. St. Joseph's feast is celebrated on June 23. St. Joseph is the patron saint of prisoners and Prussia.
