St. Justin Martyr
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Justin. During St. Justin’s life he decided to never end his journey of searching for religious truth even when he converted to Christianity after many years of studying different pagan philosophies.
St. Justin was born during the year 100 and when he was a young man, he was extremely attracted to the school of Plato. However, he was able to find out that the Christian religion was able to answer the great questions about life and existence better than many philosophers.
However, upon his very powerful conversion he decided to continue to wear the philosopher’s mantle, and he eventually became the first Christian philosopher.
St. Justin was able to combine the Christian religion with all of the best elements in Greek philosophy. In his own opinion, philosophy was an educator that was to lead one to Christ.
St. Justin is also known as an apologist, an he is one who defended in writing the Christian religion against many of the attacks and the misunderstandings of the pagans.
Two of St. Justin’s apologies have actually come down to us through many different generations; the apologies are addressed to the Roman emperor and to the Senate.
Due to St. Justin’s loyal and strong commitment to the Christian religion, St. Justin was beheaded in Rome during the year 165.
St. Justin’s feast day is celebrated June 1.
