St. Lydwine
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Lydwine who is the patron saint of the sick. St. Lydwine was born during the year 1380, in Schiedam, Holland.
When St. Lydwine was growing up she was one of the nine children in her family. St. Lydwine’s parents were very hard workers and did anything they could to provide comfort and other things for their family.
During St. Lydwine’s youth, she had suffered from many different illnesses and diseases which led to her being bedridden.
St. Lydwine was a person who was able to experience many mystical gifts such as, visions of heaven, hell, and purgatory. St. Lydwine was also able to have many apparitions of Christ and the stigmata.
Thomas à Kempis wrote a biography book for St. Lydwine. St. Lydwine was canonized during the year 1890 by Pope Leo Xlll.
During the year 1396, St. Lydwine had fallen very badly while skating. St. Lydwine had bumped into one of her friends which caused St. Lydwine to fall and break one of her ribs on the right side of he rib cage.
St. Lydwine was never able to completely recover from this injury. Due to this injury an abscess had formed inside her body. After some time the abscess had popped and caused St. Lydwine to feel great pain and she underwent severe suffering.
Eventually, St. Lydwine started to suffer a bunch of mysterious illnesses which she faced with great courage and perseverance. St. Lydwine accepted all of her suffering because she believed it was the will of God and St. Lydwine offered up all of her suffering for other people, and for all of the sins of humanity.
Some of the illnesses St. Lydwine endured include; severe headaches, vomiting, fever, bedsores, toothaches, spasms of the muscles, blindness, neuritis and the stigmata.
St. Lydwine died during the year 1433. St. Lydwine’s feast day is celebrated on April 14.
