St. Martha, St. Mary and St. Lazarus

St. Martha, St. Mary, and their brother St. Lazarus were very close friends of Jesus.

St. Martha’s great faith is a very strong is evident when she called on Jesus after her brother’s death. “Jesus told her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world’” (John 11:25-27).

During one very important occasion, St. Martha had prepared a meal for Jesus and his fellow guests and she had stated that: All hands should pitch in to help with the dinner. Also during that occasion St. Mary, had spent time at Jesus’ feet and she was anointing them. In John 12:1-8 it describes that when Mary anointed Jesus’ feet at Bethany, it was an act that was praised.

The chief priests had plotted to kill St. Lazarus “because many of the Jews were turning away and believing in Jesus because of him.” St. Lazarus was also a person that the Jews said, “See how much he loved him.” In their sight Jesus raised his friend Lazarus from the dead.

St. Lazarus is supposed to have left a very beautiful written account of what he was able to witness in the next world before he was called back to life.

Close to the year 390, a pilgrim lady Etheria had done a procession that took place on the Saturday before Palm Sunday at the tomb where St. Lazarus had been raised from the dead.
