St. Matthew
I missed a very big feast day the other day so I think it is important that we celebrate today because any day, any time or any second is a good time to call on a saint and ask them for protection, guidance or to simply take the time to learn about their lives.
During his life, St. Matthew was a Jew, who had spent some time working for the occupying Roman forces, and he would collect taxes from other Jews. The Pharisees had actually lumped them with “sinners” (Matthew 9:11-13). So it was shocking to them to hear Jesus call such a man to be one of his intimate followers.
St. Matthew had actually gotten Jesus in trouble because he had a sort of going-away party at his house. The Gospel makes it clear to us that many tax collectors and “those known as sinners” had actually went to the dinner. The Pharisees were shocked with who had attended the the party. The Pharisees thought; What business did the Jesus have with these people, who were sinners? However, Jesus’ answer was truly beautiful he said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Matthew 9:12b-13). Jesus is calling everyone, regardless of what we may have done in our past, you are chosen and you can truly make a difference and guide more people to Christ.
St. Matthew’s feast day is celebrated on September 21, he is the patron saint of accountants, actors, bankers, bookkeepers, tax collectors and taxi drivers.
