St. Norbert of Xanten
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Norbert.
During the 12th century in the French region of Premontre, St. Norbert was able to found a religious Order that was known as the Praemonstratensians or the Norbertines.
St. Norbert’s order had many different roles which included; the combating against rampant heresies—particularly heresies that had to do with the Blessed Sacrament, the revitalizing many of the faithful who had grown indifferent and dissolute, and they also focused on the reconciliation among enemies.
St. Norbert was a person who entertained no pretensions about his own personal abilities to accomplish multiple tasks. Even with all the help from the hardworking men who joined his Order, St. Norbert continued to realize that nothing could ever be done without the help from God’s power. Due to the fact that St. Norbert was able to find this help especially through a special devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. St. Norbert and his fellow members would praise God for the success that they had achieved in converting heretics, reconciling a numerous amount of enemies, and strengthening and rebuilding the faith in indifferent believers.
Many of the members lived in central houses for most of the week and they would serve in parishes on the weekends.
Eventually, St. Norbert was able to become an archbishop of Magdeburg which was located in central Germany, the territory was half pagan and half Christian during that time. St. Norbert was so humble that he was extremely hesitant to accept the position. However, while he was in that position he was extremely zealous and courageous and he continued to do his very hard and tiring work for the Church until he passed away on June 6, 1134.
St. Norbert’s feast day is celebrated on June 6 and he is the patron saint of childbirth.
