St. Paulinus of Nola

Today we remember the life of St. Paulinus.

St. Paulinus was born during the year 354 and he was born near Bordeaux. St. Paulinus was actually the son of the Roman prefect of Gaul, who actually owned extensive property in Gaul and Italy. During his life, St. Paulinus was able to become a distinguished lawyer, and he had held several public offices in the Roman Empire. St. Paulinus and his Spanish wife, Therasia, were able to retire at a very early age to a life of cultured leisure.

The two of them were actually baptized by the saintly bishop who was in Bordeaux during that time and they later moved to Therasia’s estate in Spain. After they had to endure many childless years, they were able to have a son however, he died a week after his birth. This very sad and tough event began their life of great austerity and charity, they had given away most of their Spanish property during this time of their lives. St. Paulinus was eventually rather unexpectedly ordained a priest during Christmas by the bishop of Barcelona.

Later on, St. Paulinus and his wife decided to move to Nola, which was located near Naples. St. Paulinus had a very great love for Saint Felix of Nola who was an extremely charitable person, and St. Paulinus had spent much effort in promoting a life of devotion to this saint. St. Paulinus during his life had given away most of his remaining property and he had continued his work which was serving the poor. St. Paulinus had supported a group of debtors, many homeless people and other needy people. By extreme and popular demand St. Paulinus was made bishop of Nola and he was able to guide that diocese for 21 years.

St. Paulinus’ last years were sadly saddened by the very intense invasion of the Huns. Among a few of his writings is the earliest extant Christian wedding song. St. Paulinus died on June 22, 431 and his feast day is celebrated on June 22.
