St. Peregrine Laziosi
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Peregrine. St. Peregrine was born to a very wealthy family who lived in Forli, Italy, during the year 1260. When St. Peregrine was young he was very involved in politics and he was a member of the anti-papal party.
During one crazy event, the Pope had decided to send St. Philip Benizi to help solve a dispute that had been occurring. When St. Philip was trying settle the dispute he was struck in the face by St. Peregrine. In respond to this event, St. Philip decided to offer the other cheek, instead of reacting negatively and deciding to hit St. Peregrine back. This event was so powerful to St. Peregrine that St. Peregrine decided to repent for the wrong that he had committed as soon as he could and he converted to Catholicism.
St. Peregrine later had received a vision from the Virgin Mary, in his vision he was told by Mary to join the Servites who were located in Siena, Italy. Being obedient to the commands of the Virgin Mary that he had gotten, St. Peregrine went to Siena, Italy and joined the Servites as soon as he could.
It had been reported that St. Peregrine never sat himself down for over thirty years, during that time he also spent a lot of time, observing silence and solitude. Later on however, St. Peregrine was sent to Forli to create a new house of the Servite Order. St. Peregrine was the right priest and person for this job, St. Peregrine had a good reputation for his fervent preaching and he was said to be a great confessor.
St. Peregrine was later diagnosed with cancer in his foot and he had to get amputated. During the night before his amputation, St. Peregrine spent the entire night in complete prayer. When the next morning came St. Peregrine was found and he had been completely cured. This miracle that occurred caused his reputation to become more known and praised.
St. Peregrine died during the year 1345 at the young age age of eighty-five, St. Peregrine was canonized later by Pope Benedict XIII during the year 1726.
When St. Peregrine was young he was in open defiance of the Church. However, as soon as he was given the grace of conversion, he accepted the opportunity and became a new man. After his death, St. Peregrine had become one of the greatest saints of his time. St. Peregrine’s great fervor and qualities has helped bring many people back to the Catholic faith.
During St. Peregrine’s intense battle with cancer, St. Peregrine turned to God in prayer and was rewarded for his faith, and trust in God, his faith enabled him over many years to lead others to the truth. St. Peregrine is the patron of cancer patients and his feast day is celebrated on May 1.
Prayer to St. Peregrine:
St. Peregrine pray that we may be able to stay positive and close to Christ and the saints during all moments of trial, temptations and stress. St. Peregrine help us to gain the wisdom and knowledge we need to be able to spread Christ’s love to everyone. St. Peregrine please pray for all of the cancer patient and people who may be suffering with any other illnesses, help them to be comforted by God and intercede that God to keep them in his hands.
