St. Peter and St. Paul

Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Peter and St. Paul.

St. Peter

St. Peter was a very dedicated fisher man and one most impactful and important moments in his life, began when he was told along the Sea of Galilee to become a fisher of men for Jesus. During the New Testament we are able to picture St. Peter as the main leader of the apostles, who was chosen by Jesus to have a very deep and beautiful relationship with him. St. Peter was able to be a witness of the Transfiguration, he also got to witness the raising of a dead child to life, and he was present during the agony in Gethsemane. St. Peter’s mother-in-law was also cured by Jesus. St. Peter was also sent with John to prepare the last Passover before Jesus’ death. A cool fact is that St. Peter’s name is first on every list of apostles.

One of the most impactful things that was said to St. Peter was when Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:17b-19).

Even though St. Peter was able to have this very spectacular and beautiful relationship with Jesus, St. Peter also had his human weakness, and these weaknesses were shown even in the presence of Jesus. However, St. Peter was a man who was able to repent for his sins and become a better person. It is important that we repent and ask Jesus for guidance and assistance so that we may overcome any obstacle we may encounter.

The Risen Jesus later told Peter to feed his lambs and his sheep (John 21:15-17). We should all seek to guide others to Christ through love, charity and mercy.

St. Paul

St. Paul truly believed that: Only God can save humanity. In order to be truly saved from itself, from sin, from the devil, and from death, humanity must truly open themselves up completely to Jesus.

St. Paul was able to witness this himself after he had his very impactful and beautiful conversion to Christianity while he was on the road to Damascus.

After this very intense and miraculous conversion St. Paul never lost his love for Christ and St. Paul continued to do Christ’s will. St. Paul was able to guide many people to Christ through his charitable actions and kindness.

St. Paul also never lost his love for his Jewish family, even though he had carried on a very long and intense lifelong debate with them about the uselessness of the Law without Christ.

St. Paul is the patron saint of missionaries, writers, evangelists, authors and workers.

St. Peter is the patron saint of net makers, fishermen and ship builders. St. Peter and St. Paul’s feast day is celebrated on June 29.
