St. Peter of Tarentaise
Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Peter of Tarentaise. During his life St. Peter served God in many ways, St. Peter was a Cistercian archbishop.
St. Peter was born during the year 1102 and he was born in Dauphine, France, which was located near Vienne.
When St. Peter was 20 years old, he felt the calling to join the Cistercian Order at Bonneveaux. Therefore during that year he joined the Cistercian Order with his two of his brothers and his father.
St. Peter was known for his piety, and great actions of charity. When St. Peter was thirty years old he helped serve as the first abbot of Tamie, which was located in the Tarentaise Mountains, which was between Geneva and Savoy. When St. Peter was there he decided to build a beautiful hospice for travelers.
During the year 1142, St. Peter was named the archbishop of Tarentaise and this was done against his wishes because he wanted to live a simple and humble life. When St. Peter was archbishop he devoted a lot of his energy to reforming the diocese, helping the clergy get rid of corrupt and immoral members, helping and serving the poor, and making education better.
St. Peter is also known for starting a very nice tradition of distributing bread and soup this tradition would occur right before the harvest, and the tradition occurred in many places throughout France until the French Revolution.
After St. Peter served for thirteen years as bishop, St. Peter suddenly vanished and no one could find him. Many people feared the worst, however, they eventually found him and St. Peter was serving as a lay brother in a Cistercian abbey in Switzerland. When they found him they were able to convince St. Peter to go back to Tarentaise and resume his episcopal duties.
St. Peter was a very trustworthy and honest man, therefore he was trusted as an advisor by the Pope and kings at that time. St. Peter would defend the papal rights in France. On one occasion St. Peter was asked to help in making reconciliation between King Louis VII of France and Prince Henry II of England.
St. Peter died on September 14 , 1174 while he was making his way home from an unsuccessful papal assignment which was to reconcile the kings of France and England. St. Peter was canonized during the year 1191. St. Peter’s feast day is celebrated on May 8.
