St. Teresa Margaret of The Sacred Heart
St Teresa was born on July 15, 1747, she was born into a very large family, and she was the second child out of fourteen children in her family. St. Teresa was baptized Anna Maria on July 16, 1747 which is also the feast day for Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Ever since a young age St. Teresa wanted to live a life of deep devotion with God and she asked many question about God. St. Teresa had a lot of spiritual guidance in her house, her father realized that God had big plans for her and he guided her to grow spiritual. Her father also showed her the devotion to the Sacred Heart.
At the age of 9, St. Teresa was sent to the Benedictine school of St. Apollonia in Florence, Italy. Many people noticed St. Teresa’s prayer and devotion and let her receive communion a year early. One day when St. Teresa was in her room she heard a voice say, “I am Teresa of Jesus and I want you among my daughters”. Right after she heard the statement she went to pray and received confirmation that the experience she had was God leading her to do his will. St. Teresa made all the arrangements needed to join Carmel, and she joined in September 1, 1764. On March 11, 1765 she was given her Carmelite habit and changed her name from Anna Maria to Sister Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart. St. Teresa had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
As St. Teresa started to pray more, she started to grow in her virtues such as humility, charity and mercy. When St. Teresa was still a novice, she was told to take care of one of the older nuns and St. Teresa took care of her with much love and joy. The older nun later died, and St. Teresa had to take on a different task. When a severe epidemic of influenza affected her community, St. Teresa took care of the sick and was left to care for the sick until she passed away. St. Teresa was a very calm, peaceful, and cheerful person which made it easy for her to help and communicate with the sick. St. Teresa always showed so much love, respect and mercy to the other sisters, even if it was hard for her to do sometimes.
She died at the age of 22 and her death shocked many people. On March 6th she ate dinner on her own because she missed her communities dinner due to the fact that she was helping the sick during that time. When she was eating alone she felt a very quick and strong pain. A doctor saw her and said it was just a Colic. St. Teresa was expected to be better the next day however her spasms only got worse and she passed away on March 7, 1770. St. Teresa’s incorrupt body is resting right now in a Carmelite Church. St. Teresa demonstrated to us the importance of having a strong devotion to God and how we can grow in our virtues and faith through a strong devotion with him. St. Teresa’s feast day is celebrated on September 1st.
