St. Thomas

Today we celebrate the feast day of St. Thomas. St. Thomas is a saint who is also known as “Doubting Thomas” ever since he doubted that Jesus had resurrected. However, if St. Thomas was able to doubt, he must have also believed. St. Thomas had made one of the most impactful statements of the faith in the New Testament: “My Lord and My God!” and, in so expressing his faith, gave Christians a prayer that will be said till the end of time. He also occasioned a compliment from Jesus to all later Christians: “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29).

St. Thomas should be known for his bravery because he was a very courageous and strong man. Perhaps it may be hard to see St. Thomas’ courage at first sight since he did run away, like the rest did while at the showdown. However, St. Thomas during his life expressed his willingness and ability to die with Jesus. An occasion where St. Thomas’ bravery is visible is when Jesus told him to go to Bethany after Lazarus had passed away. Since Bethany was very close to Jerusalem, this meant walking into the very midst of enemy territory and to almost certain death. However, in stead of abandoning the mission, St. Thomas decided to say to the other apostles, “Let us also go to die with him” (John 11:16b).

St. Thomas’ feast day is celebrated on July 3. St. Thomas is the patron saint of

architects, builders, construction, many countries and theologians.
