The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII had decided to make the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.”

When taking a look back in history we are able to find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In many following centuries, the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some of the authors in the West were hesitant. However by the start of the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was actually celebrated under a various amount of different names including the Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, and the Assumption. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity.

Scripture does not give an exact account of Mary’s assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 actually speaks of a woman who was caught up in the battle between good and evil. Furthermore, during 1 Corinthians 15:20, St. Paul actually speaks of Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Since Mary is very closely related with all the mysteries of Jesus’ life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit was able to lead the Church to know that Mary shares in his glorification. Mary was so close to Jesus on earth, that she must be with him body and soul in heaven.
