The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This feast day was created during the year 1954 by Pope Pius XII. However, Mary’s queenship has its roots way back into Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel had announced that Mary’s Son would be able to receive the throne of David and rule forever. While at the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As it is present in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is very closely shared in Jesus’ kingship.

During the fourth century St Ephrem had recognized and called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.” Later on in history, Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title. Many different Hymns from the 11th to 13th centuries also addressed Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican rosary and also the Franciscan crown and a numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship.

The feast is a logical follow-up to the celebration of the Assumption, and it is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. During Pius XII’s 1954 encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, he is able to make it clear that Mary deserves the title because she is the true Mother of God, because she is very closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection, and because of her intercessory power.

The feast of The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on August 22.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary:

Blessed Virgin Mary during your life and now you have been given the chance to live very closely to your Son Jesus. Mary we pray that you may guide us so that we may be able to strengthen our devotion and intimacy with your Son. Through you Mary we are able to have a great path to your Son, help and guide us to choose death over sin so that we may deepen our intimacy with you and with your Son.

Amen
