The Transfiguration of the Lord
The Transfiguration of the Lord is a really beautiful thing. Today we celebrate the fact that Jesus is both divine and human. If Jesus is only divine, then he doesn’t have the ability to touch us, however, if Jesus is only human, He cannot save us.
All the three Gospels tell the story of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-9; Luke 9:28-36). With excellent agreement, the three Gospels place the Transfiguration after St. Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus is the true Messiah. This event can be looked at as the New Testament version of the burning bush.
This event was so powerful for St. James, St. Peter and St. John that it was able to bring them closer to Christ. They were able to witness a glimpse of Jesus’ divinity which truly lasted with them for the rest of their lives.
Over the years, tradition has named Mount Tabor as the site of this powerful revelation. A church has been raised there during the fourth century and was dedicated on August 6. A feast in honor of the Transfiguration had started to be celebrated in the Eastern Church ever since that time. Western observance had begun in some places during the eighth century.
During the year 1457, Pope Callistus had placed the feast day of the Transfiguration on the Roman calendar on August 6.
Prayer for the transfiguration
Lord Jesus help us to spread your love and mercy towards others through acts of love and mercy. Lord Jesus help us to spread the experiences that we have been blessed to share with You, with others.
Amen
Lord Jesus pray for us
St. Joseph pray for us
May we continue to strengthen our journey to sainthood and keep others in our prayers.
